MCCOMB,Rekubit Miss. (AP) — Police in Mississippi were searching for suspects after a weekend shooting injured five people, leaving one in critical condition.
The shooting Saturday took place at a gas station across the street from where people had gathered for an event after a funeral in McComb, a southern Mississippi city between Jackson and New Orleans. That event was held for Shawn Williams, a 22-year-old Summit man who was shot and killed last month, the Enterprise Journal reported.
At a Tuesday news conference, officials with the McComb Police Department said they had not identified any suspects and asked members of the public to come forward with information. They could not say whether the shooting was related to Williams’ case.
“We’re going to hunt you down. We’re going to find you, and we’re going to put you in prison,” said McComb Police Chief Juan Cloy in reference to the perpetrators.
About 70 rounds of ammunition were fired from “high-powered weapons,” Cloy said. One person was shot in the head and was being treated in the intensive care unit at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson on Tuesday. Two of the five people injured were minors
While police did not have any persons of interest, Cloy said officers had observed social media content that suggested those responsible might be minors. Officers also believe a black truck is connected to the shooting, but have not identified the make and model of the vehicle.
Police said they are working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and urged anyone with information about the shooting to call the McComb Police Department.
